Football Tactics Glossary

This glossary explains common football tactic words that coaches, analysts and fans use when discussing formations and match plans.

High press

A high press is when a team tries to win the ball close to the opponent's goal. The tactical board can show pressing angles, cover shadows and triggers such as a backwards pass or poor first touch.

Low block

A low block is a compact defensive shape close to the defending team's goal. Mourinho-style defensive masterclasses often focus on compact distances, controlled pressure and fast counter-attacks after regaining the ball.

Gegenpressing

Gegenpressing, or counter-pressing, is the immediate attempt to win the ball back after losing possession. It requires short distances between players and good rest defence behind the ball.

Build-up play

Build-up play describes how a team moves the ball from defence into midfield and attack. Coaches may use a 3-2 build-up, goalkeeper plus centre-backs, inverted fullbacks, a double pivot or a midfielder dropping between centre-backs.

Half spaces

The half spaces are the channels between the central lane and the wide lanes. Many modern attacks try to place creative players in these areas to receive between the lines.

Use the tactical board to test these concepts visually.
